getm.app ("we", "us", or "our") is a location exploration app for iOS. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices. By using getm.app, you agree to this policy.
Summary
- We use your location on your device to determine which map hex you've entered.
- We store hex identifiers (H3 indices), not your raw GPS coordinates or movement trail.
- We collect your phone number for account sign-in and an optional display name.
- We do not sell your personal data.
Information we collect
Account information
- Phone number — used for authentication via one-time passcode (OTP) SMS.
- Display name — optional, set by you in Settings.
- Account identifier — a unique user ID assigned when you create an account.
Exploration data
- Hex index (H3) — a coarse grid cell identifier for each area you've explored. This is the primary data we store about where you've been.
- Visit count — how many times you've entered each hex.
- Timestamps — when you first explored a hex and when you last visited it.
- Place labels — approximate location names (e.g. neighborhood, city, country) derived from reverse geocoding. These are text labels, not GPS coordinates.
Memories
- Photos — images from your camera or photo library that you choose to attach to memories. These are uploaded to our cloud storage.
- Memory content — custom place names and notes you write for your stamped hexes.
Website analytics
- Page path — which page on getm.app was viewed (e.g. home, privacy, support).
- Referrer — the site that linked you here, if any.
- IP address — used to derive approximate country and for aggregate traffic statistics.
- Country — a two-letter country code (e.g. SG, US) derived from your IP address.
We do not use cookies or a persistent visitor ID for this. Data is stored in our own database and is not sold.
What we do NOT store
- Raw GPS latitude/longitude coordinates
- Continuous location history or movement paths
- Background location logs beyond what is needed to identify hex tiles in real time
How we use location
getm.app requests location permission to reveal hex tiles as you move. Your device's GPS is used in real time to calculate which hex you are in. Once a hex is recorded, we store only the hex identifier — not the precise coordinate that was used to detect it.
If you grant "Always" location access, getm.app can continue exploring hexes when the app is in the background. You can change or revoke location permissions at any time in your iPhone Settings.
How we use your information
- To authenticate your account and keep you signed in
- To record and display your explored hexes on the map
- To calculate exploration statistics (cities, countries, area covered)
- To sync your data across devices linked to your account
- To respond to support requests
Friends & social features
getm.app lets you connect with friends. Here is how your data is shared when you do:
- Friend requests — requests are sent by phone number. When someone sends you a request, they see the phone number they entered to find you.
- What friends can see — once a request is accepted, your friends can see your stamped hexes, as well as your memory names, notes, and photos.
- Removing friends — you can remove a friend at any time, which stops them from seeing your hexes and memories.
Third-party services
We use the following third-party services to operate getm.app:
- Supabase — authentication, database, and cloud sync (Supabase Privacy Policy)
- Twilio — delivery of SMS one-time passcodes for sign-in (Twilio Privacy Policy)
- Apple / Google (device geocoding) — reverse geocoding to attach city and neighborhood names to hexes
- OpenStreetMap / Nominatim — approximate city area data for coverage statistics
- OpenFreeMap — map tile rendering in the app
- ipapi.co — IP-to-country lookup for anonymous website visit statistics (ipapi.co Privacy Policy)
These providers process data according to their own privacy policies. We only share what is necessary for the service to function.
Data storage and security
Exploration data is stored locally on your device and synced to our secure cloud database. Data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS). We use row-level security so each user can only access their own data.
Data retention
We retain your account and exploration data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your associated data from our servers within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law.
Your rights and choices
- Location — control via iOS Settings > getm.app > Location
- Display name — edit or remove in the app Settings
- Account deletion — delete your account directly in the app via Settings > Delete Account. This permanently deletes your account, stamped hexes, memories, and photos. You can also email us at chris@getm.app if you are unable to access the app.
- Access — contact us to request a copy of your data
Children's privacy
getm.app is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
International users
Your data may be processed and stored on servers located outside your country. By using getm.app, you consent to this transfer. We take steps to ensure your data is treated securely and in accordance with this policy.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised policy on this page and update the "Last updated" date. Continued use of getm.app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
